5 Tips for a Fall Closet Refresh
Fall = bonfires, football, comfy sweaters, pumpkin spice and everything nice! The weather is changing so it’s time to bust out the sweaters and boots and put away the swimwear and sandals.
The first step always: EDIT (but this time with an easy twist)
It’s not always everyone’s favorite step but it is necessary in order to transition and organize your closet. We like to follow these steps:
- take everything out
- sort, edit, and group (donate, sell, and then clothes based on type: sweaters, t-shirts, pants, etc.)
- organize by planning for the space you have: figuring out the best way to store your items is dependent on your space and setup. If you have more hanging space, plan to hang as many items as possible. If you have more drawer or shelving space, plan to fold most items and utilize baskets.
Now, for the easy twist on how to edit your clothes: the hanger trick. Hang all of your clothes in your closet backwards. Once you’ve worn an item, hang it back up but facing forward. At the end of the season, you will know anything you haven’t worn is still hanging backwards so you can donate or sell it! How easy is that?
Sweater weather: minus the weird creases on your shoulders
I love wearing cozy sweaters in the fall but HATE the creases that come from hangers. Ideally, if your closet allows, you can fold your sweaters and place them on a shelf in your closet. We love these clear stackable sweater drawers https://rstyle.me/cz-n/fufv45cmh57that allow you to keep your sweaters neatly stacked so they won’t fall over, and easily accessible on a shelf in your closet. You can also utilize a shelf divider to keep your sweaters neatly folded and separated. If you’re hanging your sweaters, watch this video where I show an awesome folding trick for sweaters where you actually fold the sweater over the top of the hanger so you don’t get any creases!
Boots: it’s all about the space you have
As with anything we organize, you have to plan for the space you have. Boot storage depends on your specific space and setup. If you have…
- Shelving space, place your boots on shelves or the floor. There are many options to help keep your boots shape including: boot space saver, boot stand, tall boot shaper, short boot shaper.
- Hanging space, hang your boots! We love these boot clips for hanging up boots or simply using hangers with pant hooks.
At the end of the season or for boots you don’t wear often, we recommend storing your boots in a boot box.
Transitioning kids closets
Kids are constantly growing! Keep baskets in their closets for: donations (clothes that are too small), grow into (clothes that are too big), and lesser used items. For younger kids, keep out-of-season items out of sight in bins or baskets so they don’t try to wear their favorite sandals in the dead of winter or their favorite sweatshirt in the summer. We are proponents of getting kids involved in organizing at a young age. The earlier you can teach them how to fold or hang up their laundry, the better!
