I have a confession. Sometimes there are things even I can’t seem to let go of. Exhibit A: the crib both of my boys used. Once we knew that we would not be having any more children, I started getting rid of everything baby related. Many friends and family were just starting to have children, so we had plenty of people to pass things down too. That was the easy part. The crib was the last to go. I knew it was just taking up space, but I didn’t have anyone to give it too, it was past the 4 year old rule so I couldn’t sell it, and I didn’t want to just get rid of it. So, there it sat.
Until…. One day I saw something on Pinterest where they were using an old metal fence gate as a wall hanging. I immediately thought of the springs of the crib. They were so similar. I knew I could use it for something on the wall. At the same time, I was working on turning my office into an office/craft room for myself and the boys. The crib springs would be perfect for hanging up and displaying their artwork.
DIY Steps
The transformation was easy. The springs had metal pieces hanging off that attached the springs to the bed so my husband cut those off using a grinder and we were left with just the springs.
A quick coat of gold spray paint and it was ready to go on the wall. Then, I attached it to the wall and used anchors to ensure it was supported. The boys picked out some of their favorite pieces of art and we hung them using clothespins.
I love how it turned out and that I get to keep one part of the crib. Find ways to reuse or repurpose those sentimental items so that they are not just taking up space or being stored away where you can’t enjoy them. The crib springs are now functional and I get to look at them everyday. With both boys in preschool this year I’m sure we will have plenty of masterpieces to display!
